The Cameleer Legacy
My great-grandfather Gulam Badoola was a cameleer who helped open Australia's interior. He married Mariam Martin from the Murchison region. I carry lineage to the poet Behzad Lucknowi. These are not footnotes — they are the foundation of who I am and why this work matters.
I am Yarmatji Badimaya. This heritage shapes my understanding of belonging, displacement, and what it means to build institutions that actually serve people like me — and the many communities who have been similarly erased from the stories we tell about this country.
Growing Up
I grew up in the Pilbara, in near-complete isolation. There were no families like mine, no cultural community, no mirrors. I became the first doctor in my family — an achievement that carried enormous weight, but did not heal the disconnection.
That experience of being the only one — of navigating institutions not built for you — became the lens through which I eventually understood health systems. They are colonial institutions. And I had been training doctors to work within them without ever naming that.
Why This Work
I stopped searching for belonging and started building spaces for others in disconnection — spaces designed for actual transformation, not assimilation. First Crossings Advisory exists because genuine anti-racism requires clinical and lived expertise, institutional knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to following community leadership.
In schools, I teach cameleer and Macassan history using my family archive as primary source material — real artefacts of real lives. I want young people to know these hidden stories and understand that they can question systems and imagine different ones.
